Sri Lanka Travel & Seasonal Guide
Sri Lanka is a year-round paradise shaped by two distinct seasonal patterns. Discover where to go and when, how to pack, and how to travel respectfully.
Two Monsoons, Constant Sunshine
Choosing the Right Sri Lanka Season
Because Sri Lanka experiences two contrasting weather systems, there is always a coast blessed with calm turquoise waters, sunshine, and perfect conditions.

WINTER SEASON | SOUTH COAST
Prime Travel Window: December to April
During the northern hemisphere winter, the south and west coasts of Sri Lanka enjoy their dry, sunniest months. The sea is tranquil, ideal for swimming, surfing and whale watching, while the hill country is crisp and clear.
Seasonal Highlights:
- ✦Best weather for south and west coast beaches including Mirissa, Galle and Bentota.
- ✦Whale and dolphin watching off Mirissa, roughly November to April.
- ✦Dry, clear conditions in the hill country including Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains.

SUMMER SEASON | EAST COAST
Prime Travel Window: May to September
While the southwest catches rainfall, the east coast enters its golden dry season. Ocean waters at Nilaveli, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay become glassy and warm, making summer the ultimate time for east coast escapes, marine exploration and world-class surfing.
Seasonal Highlights:
- ✦Calm seas and sunshine on the east coast including Trincomalee, Pasikudah and Arugam Bay.
- ✦Pigeon Island snorkelling and surfing at Arugam Bay.
- ✦Ideal for dry-zone cultural sites including Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

What to Pack
Dressing comfortably across different microclimates
- ✓Light, breathable fabrics: Cotton and linen are best for coastal humidity and lowlands like Sigiriya and Colombo.
- ✓Warm highland layers: Evenings in Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains drop to 10°C–14°C. Pack a warm fleece or light jacket.
- ✓Comfortable walking shoes: Essential for climbing Sigiriya Rock, Horton Plains World's End, and tea estate walks.
- ✓Sun protection & eco insect repellent: High-SPF reef-safe sunscreen, polarized sunglasses and a sunhat.
Temple & Cultural Etiquette
Respecting sacred Sri Lankan traditions
- ✓Cover shoulders and knees: When entering temples (such as Kandy Tooth Temple or Anuradhapura), both men and women must cover their shoulders and wear attire below the knees.
- ✓Remove shoes & headwear: All footwear and hats must be removed before stepping onto temple grounds. Shoe storage is available.
- ✓Never turn your back for photos: It is considered disrespectful to turn your back directly toward a Buddha statue for selfies or photographs.
- ✓White or modest colours preferred: Wearing white or light-coloured clothing when visiting sacred Buddhist stupas is traditional and welcomed.
